Jonas Schwarz

Behavioural Biologist and Wildlife Photographer

My name is Jonas Schwarz, raised in Nordfriesland at the North Sea, where I developed a deep love for nature and the ocean. I studied behavioral biology in Münster, Vienna and Bielefeld and over the last 14 years I had the chance to work with various species, including Capuchin monkeys, wolves, harbor seals, marmots, and seahorses. During my PhD, I spent several months camping under very basic conditions on the Galápagos Islands to study the animal personalities and diving behavior of sea lions.

In addition to my time in the Galápagos, I have studied the behaviour of animals in places like California, Cambodia, and the Italian Alps. My passion for wildlife photography grew alongside my research, with my background in observing animal behavior proving invaluable. My goal is to research animal behavior to optimize wildlife conservation. I give talks in schools and for NGOs to share my passion for wildlife and inspire others to protect these species. This is also what I aim to achieve with my photos— to make people fall in love with wildlife and ignite their own conservation spark.

Currently, I live both in California and Freiburg in the Black Forest, working at the University of California, Santa Cruz to study the foraging behavior of sea lions around the world.
